So...

I'm off my part time blue-collar gig for awhile... like a month for which I will still get paid.

With the time off I had planned on finishing some of the screenplays that I've been working on the last couple of years, but I get distracted too easily. Last year, we started building a fence around our front yard and I decided to try and finish it.

Then I decided to mow the lawn.

Then I decided to build a couple of dressers for my daughters.

Then i decided to do all these photoshop art and montage tutorials to up my photoshop game.

On top of all that, I have all my freelance assignments every week.

Then the NBA Playoffs are on every night. And the Nuggets are doing it!

Already a week and a half into my month "vacation" I haven't even opened my screenplays. Now I'm wasting more time writing in this blog that I update every three months.

Maybe I should do like Kanye and post video and pictures of stuff every other day.

Who knows.

Be back soon.

Tips for a better life

Tips for Better Life

1. Take a 10-30 minutes walk every day. And while you walk, smile.

2. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day.

3. Sleep for 7 hours.

4. Live with the 3 E's -- Energy, Enthusiasm, and Empathy.

5. Play more games.

6. Read more books than you did the previous year.

7. Make time to practice meditation, yoga, and prayer. They provide us with daily fuel for our busy lives.

8. Spend time with people over the age of 70 & under the age of 6.

9. Dream more while you are awake.

10. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants.

11. Drink plenty of water.

12. Try to make at least three people smile each day.

13. Don't waste your precious energy on gossip.

14. Forget issues of the past. Don't remind your partner with his/her mistakes of the past. That will ruin your present happiness.

15. Don't have negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.

16. Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.

17. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar.

18. Smile and laugh more.

19. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. Don't hate others.

20. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

21. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

22. Make peace with your past so it won't spoil the present.

23. Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about. Don't compare your partner with others.

24. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.

25. Forgive everyone for everything.

26. What other people think of you is none of your business.

27. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

28. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.

29. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.

30. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

31. The best is yet to come.

32. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

33. Do the right thing!

34. Call your family often.

35. Your inner most is always happy. So be happy.

36. Each day give something good to others.

37. Don't over do. Keep your limits.

38. Share this with someone you care about

What does my name mean?

This post was inspired by my dude Jesus Trevino, who recently wrote about the story behind his name on his blog. I figured it was a good topic for me to write about as well, since I get asked about my name, Quibian Salazar-Moreno, ALL the time.

First, pronunciation. For English speakers my name is pronounced "Key-B-On". I know it may seem a bit weird because words like "quiche" or "quick" don't start with a syllable sounding like "key", but in spanish, words like "quitar"or "aqui" have that "key" sound. In Spanish the "b-on" part of my name is actually one syllable, but I make it two syllables to make it easier for English speakers and most of the time, the "a" is supposed to have an accent over it.

For most of my schooling life, elementary, high school and college, I was known as Quibian Smith or Quibian Smith-Moreno. But let's begin with my first name.

My family is Panamanian and I was born in Panama. In Panamanian history books, there's a story about a native central American named El Quibian. There are several versions to the story, but here are the basics:

On Christopher Columbus' fourth trip to the "New World", he arrived at the Bay of Portobelo which is now in the Colon province of Panama. When he arrvied, he met El Quibian, which historians aren't sure if that's the native's name or his title. Regardless, Columbus and El Quibian were cool at first because they were going to handle their business and do some trading and whatnot.

Quibian and his crew welcomed Columbus, took them to some hills and showed them where some gold was. The Spanish were all excited since it was the most gold they had seen since they've been in that area of the New World. Quibian thought that was it and the Spanish would then be on their way.

But when Columbus left to go back to Spain, he left about 80 men and his brother Bartholomew to build a town. Columbus planned to come back to colonize the country, take ownership of the land and the minerals found within. El Quibian learned of the explorer's plans and put together a plan of attack on the Spanish settlement. Unfortunately, some of Quibian's people admitted (READ: snitched!) to the Spaniards that they were planning to attack. So some of the Spanish men got together, raided Quibian's camp and kidnapped him and his family.

The Spaniards tied Quibian to their boat as they moved up a river with plans to take him back to Spain so that he wouldn't cause anymore trouble. But Quibian used his wit and convinced one of the guards to loosen his ropes because they were too tight. He quickly jumped into the river and escaped.

A day later, Quibian and 300 warriors attacked the Spanish settlement, shooting arrows, darts and spears; rescuing his family and the other prisoners that were taken. The attack overwhelmed the 80 or so men. Some stories say half the men were killed, others say only one guy was killed. Regardless, the men abandoned their settlement and were unsuccessful colonizing at that attempt and in that area. There's a pretty detailed story here about the whole adventure.

So that's who my father named me after.

The "Smith" part of my name came from my father's stepfather, Billy Smith. Never knew him, never met him. Never even seen a picture of him. The "Moreno" part of my name is my mother's maiden name. In Latino culture, it's traditional to add your mother's maiden name because you are also part of her family. Here's a pretty good explanation of the second last name situation.

After I graduated from college in 1999/2000, I decided to change "Smith" to "Salazar." Salazar is my father's second last name and also my grandmother's maiden name. I had carried the "Smith" last name my entire life not knowing who this "Smith" character was.

Plus, I thought Salazar sounded cooler than Smith anyway.

So there it is, Quibian Salazar-Moreno. I plan to post more in 2009, than I did in 2008. One of my resolutions! Stay tuned!

A Conversation with Damian Marley...

I talked with Damian Marley back in late 2005 shortly after his album, "Welcome to Jamrock", hit stores and the summer after the single "Welcome to Jamrock" blew up. I was very excited to talk Damian because I had never talked to anyone from the Bob Marley bloodline. A year and a half later, I would get to talk Stephen Marley.

In this conversation however, we talked about the album, growing up as a Marley and talking about musical expectations abot the children of Bob Marley. Enjoy...
